The wananga was identified by the hard to reach whanau at previous workshops as an opportunity to strengthen bonding with their children, teach them seafood gathering and water safety skills, and give them knowledge about the local area.

Over two dozen whanau attended the wananga and engaged in activities including eeling, shellfish gathering, swimming, fishing, diving and horseriding.
